Why you need additional skills asides University degree.

 In my previous post, I advised Nigerian students to take their destiny into their hands to ensure they are employable anywhere in the world as they leave school.

Today, I want to emphasise why you need that skill and why you should seriously prepare to be globally employable so you can earn your living from outside Nigeria even if you still reside in Nigeria. Nigeria has witnessed a very huge setback in all ramifications since the last six years or thereabout. The rate of economic downturn witnessed during is period is unprecedented. There has been a mass exodus of foreign companies and a huge reduction in the growth of local businesses. This can be attributed largely to the insecurity in the country which has multiplied into different facets but this article is not to address the matter. The point I am trying to make is to bring to your consciousness the fact that actually if you rely only on getting a  job that is domiciled in Nigeria, you may become a victim of unemployment.

Apart from the unavailability of jobs, the Nigerian currency has also depreciated in the last six years with a rate never witnessed before. The inflation rate in January 2021 hit the highest level since 2017 as recorded by https://tradingeconomics.com/nigeria/inflation-cpi. This means that the purchasing power of the naira has dropped drastically. If you are earning in Nigeria, the currency keeps getting weaker in the market and what you earn can buy fewer things every month. Take for example transport fare to work has increased by 100% since January 2021 due to an increase in the pump price of PMS (petrol), yet the salary has remained the same. As of February 2021, a painter of Garri is sold for 800 naira, in the month of march it has risen to 1200 naira. Yet one's salary remains the same.

However, if you reside in Nigeria and earn in dollars, you will not be largely affected becausse the value of the money you receive every month will be increasing so you won't be complaining. Some may ask how possible it is to be in Nigeria and earn in dollars. It is very possible when you get a foreign job you can do remotely and  quite a number of these jobs exist. I will dedicate another conversation to that matter. 

So as  a Nigerian undergraduate, get yourself equipped with digital skills and acquire the knowlwdge of one or two foreign languages and you are good to go.
